Pipeline technicians have to know about all aspects of delivering oil and natural gas through underground pipeline networks.
The responsibilities of a pipeline technician include:
- Locating pipelines using surface detection and leak detection devices
- Overseeing maintenance
- Gauging pressures
- Checking safety relief valves
- Monitoring the pipeline network surface operations for safety and evironmental issues such as leaks, spills, and erosion and sedimentation problems
In the natural gas industry, pipeline technicians are also responsible for:
- Operating natural gas compression stations and equipment
- Monitoring metering equipment and natural gas drying facilities
